High Fructose Corn Syrup > good, bad and worse

Fructose (fruit sugar) has had it’s ups and downs over the years, long regarded as a good sweetener for people with diabetes.  The reason for this is that fructose is actually metabolized as a fat and therefore does not raise your bloodsugar.

But from simple fructose came high fructose corn syrup, an extremely cheap sweetener that you will find in just about everything from soda to candy.

High fructose corn syrup may be cheap and easy to use but it’s just not that great for you.  This article from Fox News discusses ties between foods containing this ingredient and the incidence of diabetes in children.  And this article from the Washington Post goes as far as to say it’s not good for the environment.  This is more closely tied with how the corn is grown and harvested.  You can read more about that here.

These articles are interesting and helpful but the one thing we can tell you is that we have yet to develop a diet plan that included products with high fructose corn syrup.  It just won’t help you lose weight so steer clear of it and read labels!

Back when I was a kid I drank lots of soda with high fructose corn syrup. I could never do that now, too sweet.
